What is an Affidavit of Support? Does it need to be notarized?
An Affidavit of Support (Form I-864) is a legally binding contract between a sponsor and the U.S. government, requiring the sponsor to take financial responsibility for an intending immigrant. The sponsor, typically a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who filed an immigrant petition, promises to support the immigrant so they do not become a financial burden on the government. This responsibility can last for up to 10 years or until the immigrant becomes a citizen or accumulates 40 qualifying work quarters. If the immigrant receives certain public benefits, the government agency can demand reimbursement from the sponsor, who can be sued for repayment.
