ÇAKMAK LINE MILITARY BUNKERS
Although Turkey did not actively enter the war during World War II, military defense lines called the Çakmak Line were built between 1939 and 1941, particularly to protect Istanbul from a possible Nazi occupation or air attack. Named after the Chief of General Staff at the time, Marshal Fevzi Çakmak, this line stretches between Büyükçekmece and the Black Sea.
Not only the Thracian side, but also the coastal strip of Çanakkale (Gallipoli Peninsula) and critical points at the Black Sea entrance of the Bosphorus (Anadolu Feneri, Riva, Şile) were constructed as extensions of this line to counter possible landings from the sea. Within the scope of the line, hundreds of small forts (bunkers) were built, consisting of reinforced concrete and steel reinforcements, forming the main element of the line. These structures were positioned at angles to protect each other, and heavy machine guns and ammunition depots were placed inside. • Tunnels and Bunkers: Some bunkers were connected by underground tunnels.
• Dragon Teeth: Concrete-steel blocks (dragon teeth) were erected at critical points in the terrain to slow down or prevent tank attacks. • Atatürk opposed this project during his lifetime, saying, "War is won on the ground, I will not bury the nation's money underground," but construction began after his death as the threat of war increased. A large amount of cement and steel was used to complete the bunkers.
The country's annual cement production at that time was used here. It is known that approximately 350,000 tons of cement were used in the construction of the line.
With the Nazis not turning towards Türkiye and the war ending, this line lost its function and was abandoned to its fate. In this video, we will see three bunkers, including the Kumköy and Rumeli Feneri bunkers overlooking the Black Sea coast, and the one remaining on the roadside in Uskumruköy, further inland.
