Beta decay is a type of radioactive decay in which a beta particle is emitted from an atomic nucleus. This process is associated with certain types of unstable atomic nuclei that have an excess of neutrons.



There are two common types of beta decay: beta-minus (β-) decay and beta-plus (β+) decay.


Beta-Minus (β-) Decay:


In beta-minus decay, a neutron in the nucleus is transformed into a proton, an electron (called a beta-minus particle), and an antineutrino. The antineutrino is a nearly massless, electrically neutral particle that escapes from the nucleus.


Beta-Plus (β+) Decay:


In beta-plus decay, a proton in the nucleus is transformed into a neutron, a positron (a positively charged electron), and a neutrino. The neutrino is a nearly massless, electrically neutral particle that is emitted from the nucleus.


Beta decay is governed by the weak force, one of the fundamental forces in nature responsible for processes involving the exchange of W and Z bosons. This force allows the transformation of one type of elementary particle into another.


The occurrence of beta decay is a key factor in the natural decay of certain radioactive isotopes, and it plays a significant role in nuclear physics and astrophysics. The study of beta decay has provided valuable insights into the nature of subatomic particles and their interactions.
