The economics of Anime Industry
Anime money: Even though, Anime Industry is highly prone to piracy, Anime production houses are able to survive and in most cases make a boat load of money. In this video, let's discuss the money made in Anime Industry and problems plaguing it.
In 2020 the Japanese Anime Industry has valued at around 24 billion dollars globally. Animes like Jujutsu-Kaisen, Demon Slayer and many more have become massive hits on Japanese and also overseas markets, Animes now seem to be a popular alternative to regional media.
Behind every anime you watch, there is a production committee, which manages everything about anime production. Production committee members are sole owners of Intellectual property. Hence they can make money from various sources by selling their rights and giving licences.
From this revenue and expense comparison, we can see how anime production committees can turn a profit even though many watch pirated anime episodes online.
Even though everything seems perfectly fine, there is one big problem behind the scenes:
Animation studio's revenue.
You see, the animation studio's receive only upfront fees from Committee, and sometimes royalties if it is a member of the committee which is not possible for over 80% of small studios. But still, the animation studio does most of the work from animating, adding visual effects, colouring and giving voice to the characters. Also, most of the animation studios always run tight on schedule thus making it necessary to give works to subcontractors in south-east Asian countries for cheap labour or reduce the quality of animation by giving most work to in-betweeners. In both cases, the studio artists & in-betweeners are paid less. Also, some studios have to take on debt to support the production in time.
Hence, there is a common fear in the industry, that if the lifeline animation studios themselves are cut short then there is a terrible chance that anime production may come to standstill.
