Barranquilla is the fourth largest city in Colombia, according to its economy. If you haven't heard of Barranquilla, this is the city where the world-renowned singer Shakira was born.
In recent years, Barranquilla has experienced rapid growth, thanks to the successes of its most recent mayors. It is a prosperous and thriving city with a working middle class that drives its economic growth.
In Position No. 10, we find the Viva Shopping Center. This shopping center is located in the north of the city (Cra. 51B # 87-50).
Barranquilla is a city of shopping centers. Opened in 2016, Viva Barranquilla is the second largest shopping center in the city, with 150,000 square meters.
In Position No. 9, we have Bocas de Ceniza.
Barranquilla is a city bathed by the Magdalena River and the Caribbean Sea. Bocas de Ceniza is a stunning place where the river meets the sea—the mouth of the Magdalena River where it flows into the Caribbean Sea.
In Position No. 8, we find the beautiful houses and mansions of the El Golf and Riomar neighborhoods.
If you're visiting Barranquilla by car, be sure to take a drive between 79th and 90th Streets and between 55th and 59th Avenues, where you'll find some of the most beautiful houses in the country.
In seventh place, we have the Puerto Colombia Pier. Puerto Colombia is a town located 10 minutes from Barranquilla, and precisely because of its proximity, I've included this attraction in Barranquilla's Top 10.
In sixth place, we find the Shark's Fin.
The Junior de Barranquilla soccer team is known as the Shark team, and thanks to this nickname, this impressive tourist attraction was built. It's a 30-meter-high monument located on the new and famous Avenida del Río, which we'll talk about later.
In fifth place, we have the Window to the World. This monument was built in late 2018 to inaugurate the Central American and Caribbean Games, which Barranquilla hosted.
The building is the work of Barranquilla architect Diana Escorcia Borelly, and its construction was initiated by the Tecnoglass company. It's an impressive 47-meter structure, and if you come to Barranquilla, don't hesitate to visit it; you won't regret it.
In position number 4, we find the Narcobollo restaurant.
In Barranquilla, you can honestly eat very, very well, and I could name dozens of must-try restaurants for your visit. However, I decided to highlight Narcobollo because there you'll find a mix of the most important elements of coastal cuisine: sancochos (stews), rice dishes, pasteles (meat pies), hayacas (corn tamales), carimañolas (cassava fritters), empanadas, cheese sticks, kibbeh, chicharrón (fried pork rinds), and all the other delicacies you can imagine.
The restaurant's address is (Cra. 43 # 84-188).
The story behind this peculiar name, Narcobollo, began in Cartagena when, during a raid targeting drug cartels, numerous police officers searched a house and found a large shipment of bollos limpios (a type of cornmeal dumpling), corn on the cob, angelito (a type of sweet bread), and yucca. For those watching from outside Colombia, bollos are delicious dough balls wrapped in leaves.
In third place, we have the commercial complex that includes the Buenavista, Mall Plaza, and Plaza del Parque shopping centers.
At Buenavista, you can find stores like Éxito, Jumbo, and Falabella, as well as gyms and other stores where you can find absolutely everything.
In second place, we find the Barranquilla Zoo.
The zoo covers an area of 10,000 square meters and is home to endangered species such as the white tiger.
The zoo boasts over 700 animals of some 130 species, both native and exotic, including elephants, tigers, lions, monkeys, snakes, and many more.
And…in the number one spot, we have the Malecón del Río (River Boardwalk).
Barranquilla is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Magdalena River. For many years, the city turned its back on the river, but thanks to a brilliant idea, recent administrations decided to turn the city towards the river and construct a majestic project: the Avenida del Río (River Avenue).
This avenue runs alongside the Magdalena River, and there you'll find the Malecón del Río, several kilometers of a complete coastal adventure.
