How Much Do US Prison Officers Get paid?
I’ll be specifically looking at Texas as it has the highest prison population out of any state with over 133,000 people incarcerated.
To get the job you’ll need to have at least a GED, be 18 or older and be a US citizen or an immigrant with lawful status. You also can’t have had any major criminal history in your past.
Assuming you get in you’ll go to a correctional institution academy where you’ll remain for 5 weeks receiving 200 hours of training. This will cover everything from physical training and ethics to disciplinary procedure and dealing with mental health issues.
Upon graduation you’ll then start on the job training at a prison for 104 hours. If you pass this you’ll then be a fully fledged correctional officer.
So what are you getting paid?
Well starting pay is typically $47,674 a year that increases after 2 months to $48,890. After 6 months service this jumps again to $50,048 a year. However, if you join as a veteran who served in the military for at least 2 years, you start on CO IV Pay equating to $51,323 a year. Your pay as a CO will then top out at $57,338 a year after around 6 years service.
