In this video, Carlo explains how to determine the area moment of inertia (also called second-order area moment) for composite surfaces using the table method. The area moment of inertia indicates the resistance to bending, and the SI unit is mm^4.

The total area moment of inertia is composed of the individual area moment of inertia of the sub-surfaces – here only rectangles: simple formulas from the formula collection – and the respective Steiner component. Steiner's theorem states that the area moment of inertia is the area moment of inertia at the center of the area of each partial surface and the product of the square of the distance z from the centroidal axis of the total area to the centroidal axis of the partial surface and the partial area A.
