Are you dealing with Kohler Smart Choke problems such as hard starting, extended cranking, rough running, stalling at idle, black smoke, misfiring, loss of power, governor hunting, or an engine that seems to keep running with the choke partially closed?

In this video, I show how to convert a Kohler V twin Command Pro or Kohler 7000 Series engine equipped with Smart Choke™ to a reliable manual choke instead

Smart Choke issues can occur when the choke plate, linkage, thermostat, thermal disc, electronic choke assembly, or air-vane deflector begins sticking, binding or failing to move through full range

The choke may not close completely when the engine is cold, causing difficult cold starts, or it may remain partially closed after the engine warms up, causing rich operation, black or sooty exhaust, rough running, reduced RPM, excessive fuel consumption, surging, governor hunting, and loss of power

This mower is one I plan to keep, so rather than continuing to depend on the automatic Smart Choke system, I convert it to a manual choke that gives me direct control during cold and warm starts

I show how to:

• Remove the engine shroud and blower housing
• Remove the air cleaner and air-cleaner base
• Access the Smart Choke thermostat or thermal-disc assembly
• Explain how the thermostat works with the choke linkage
• Explain how the wind vane, air vane, or deflector assembly affects choke position
• Remove the Smart Choke thermostat and air-vane assembly
• Install the correct manual choke linkage
• Install the new control assembly
• Route and connect a manual choke cable
• Check choke-plate travel and operation
• Restore dependable cold-start and warm-start control

This information may apply to many lawn tractors, riding mowers, and zero-turn mowers powered by Kohler Command Pro and Kohler 7000 Series V-twin engines equipped with the Smart Choke system.

Always verify the engine model and cable requirements before ordering parts.

The exact conversion parts and installation procedure can vary by engine model.
