My flight from Australia back to my home in USA were cancelled on me by the airline. So I became grounded. Away from my studio. BUT I have my trusty upright piano right here. The one that I learned on when I was a little girl. So I set up my phone, and started to improvise a track.
1 minute and 43 seconds into it, I get sidetracked. So I press stop and send the video to my Trackers+ band member Brandon, with instructions to put this into FL studio, and give it a beat.
Well... he does, it inspires him to make it fuller, and then he sends it off to Gabe, the most awesome guitarist... ever.
Meanwhile, I too get a copy of the track, and the lyrics just COME to me, as though they were already written and just need to have accompaniment.
I ring around the stores here, to find a mic that will work with this old ass laptop that I've got access to. I find myself a Blue Yeti, the last one in stock. I tell them to hold it for me, I'll be there within 2 hours.
I get there... touch no one. Take the mic, tap my card to pay, hand sanitize everything of mine and jump into the car.
I go home. I grab a stocking and an old coat hanger. I make a pop filter.
I sit there, holding it up to the mic, remembering not to bump against it, and I record. I send it through to Brandon. He places it into FL. Sends it to Gabe, guitar solo where I didn't sing - epic maximum effort. He will soon mix and master this, and we'll release.
Times like these where people are stranded, away from their family, their normal life, their equipment to create. But we find a way. We will use whatever we have at our disposal, we will draw from this time as inspiration, we will keep sane and create and keep keeping sane. We will have a bit more wine and beer, but that's another story.
I know it's tough to be stuck. But this will end. Eventually. And why not make something magical during the time we have, right here, right now.
Stay safe, everyone. Fuck Covid-19.
