A website starting with HTTPS is encrypted and much safer than a website that starts with HTTP.
In your web browser, all communications sent over regular HTTP connections are in "plain text." This means that if a hacker manages to break into the connection between your browser and the website, they can freely read your data. It also means that everything you do on the internet is visible, including sensitive information like passwords, credit card details, social security numbers, and the sites you visit.
HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website. The "S" at the end of HTTPS stands for "Secure." It means that all communication between your browser and the website is encrypted.
Even if somebody managed to break into the connection, they would not be able to decrypt the data. HTTPS is especially important over insecure networks, such as public WiFi.
