Kingsley Davis, from Princeton University, states that until the Industrial Revolution, the world's population grew slowly overall.

Only after the changes introduced by the technological revolution were spectacular leaps in the world's population recorded.

This was because it made the mobilization of masses of people possible and established a new balance between births and deaths.

Mexico's population is the largest among Spanish-speaking countries, the second largest in Latin America after Brazil, and the eleventh largest in the world, with 126 million inhabitants.

This data is from CONAPO (the Mexican Population Council) as of November 2019. Do you know of any other figures? Let us know in the comments.

The most populated city is the capital, Mexico City, as well as its metropolitan area. In fact, 50% of the Mexican population is concentrated in the country's 55 metropolitan areas.

And these are the 10 largest Metropolitan Areas.

Let's explore population trends...

POPULATION TRENDS IN MEXICO FROM 1700 TO 2020

The population of New Spain declined after the conquest due to new diseases, subjugation, forced labor, and cultural and economic changes.

All of this led to a minimum population level from 1521 until the mid-17th century, when it slowly began to increase.

18th Century

In the 18th century, the Mexican population was between 3 and 4 million people.

By mid-century, between 1742 and 1748, the intendancies of Mexico and Puebla concentrated almost half of the population of all of New Spain.

The characteristics of the population began to change, as Europeans and Indigenous people gave rise to a new mestizo group and fueled population growth.

19th Century

At the beginning of the 19th century, the country had around 6 million inhabitants, making it the most populous country on the continent at that time.

Mexican society was composed of 1 million whites; 1.3 million mestizos, zambos, and mulattos; and 3.6 million indigenous people.

But after the War of Independence, its population was reduced to 5 million.

However, the figure would increase substantially in a short time. By 1838, it had reached 7.8 million, including its colony in Texas.

In 1858, Benito Juárez presided over more than 8 million Mexicans.

Although the country experienced a civil war and the French invasion during that time, by the president's death in 1872, the population had increased to 9 million.

And the rate of growth would not slow. Half a million more in 4 years, reaching 13.6 million at the dawn of the 20th century.

20th Century

Throughout the 20th century, during the country's period of rapid development, the Mexican population grew from 13.6 million to 97.5 million inhabitants.

1930-1970
The period between 1930 and 1970 is known as the "Mexican Miracle" due to the economic prosperity experienced during this time.

The government invested in reducing infant mortality and increasing life expectancy.

Second Half of the 20th Century
During the second half of the 20th century, the northern states bordering the United States experienced significant population growth.

In 1967, Mexico and its neighbor established a treaty allowing the duty-free entry into the United States of all products manufactured in border cities.

1970-1980
During the 1970s and 1980s, Mexico welcomed political refugees from Latin America, Central America, and Europe.

Furthermore, Mexico is the country with the largest number of U.S. citizens living abroad, totaling one million.

This is due to the existing free trade agreement between the two countries and the fact that Mexico has become a popular retirement destination.

Currently, as of 2020, Mexico has 126 million inhabitants according to the Mexican census, but the population council projects a population of 126 million by 2030.
