The Beauty and Horror of Gitchie Manitou
Gitchie Manitou is a beautiful, tranquil preserve of wide open prairie and exposed ancient rock formation known as Sioux quartzite. Sitting on the northwest corner of Iowa, it has a rich cultural history as a spiritually significant land to the native tribes, and later was purchased by Iowa to be used as a quarry. But unfortunately, it wouldn't remain so tranquil for long, with the unfortunate tragedy that took place one Saturday night in 1973, which horrors still loom over the preserve to this day.
