Scandinavian countries like Denmark are often known as progressive societies because of their strong welfare state. They are seen leading policies to support LGBTQ+ rights and fight climate change. In fact, in 1951, Denmark was also the first country to sign and ratify the UN Refugee Convention. But in 2019, it became the first and only country to cancel the residency permits of Syrian refugees.
So, what exactly happened in Denmark over these seven decades that this country turned its image from a rich, progressive Scandinavian society to a fiercely but selectively anti-migrant country?
