What is worth noticing when you read? Whether you’re a student writing a literary analysis, a lifelong reader hoping to engage more deeply with books, or simply someone who wants to become a more attentive reader, this video offers a guide to reading literature critically, and why it’s important.

I argue why I think most exposure to close reading in English education functions off a faulty ‘hidden meaning’ model, why reading lets us become more observant and ethical beings. I provide six categories of what is worth noticing when you read, discuss five habits of great readers, and what happens to you beyond your literary interactions when you become a close reader.
