Hello friends, welcome to this new video of The Chronicle Post. Today we are going to talk about the helicopter modernization plan of the Indian Army. The Indian Army currently has very old helicopters which are to be retired soon. Let us know which new helicopters India is planning to replace these old helicopters with.
The Indian Army currently has Cheetah and Chetak helicopters which are used by the army. These helicopters have become very old and now it is time to retire them. According to the army's estimate, all these helicopters will have to be retired in the coming 3-4 years. For which the Army Aviation Corps will need about 250 new helicopters.
To replace these helicopters, India started talks with Russia in 2015 to buy 200 Kamov Ka-226 helicopters. Of these, 60 helicopters were to be imported directly from Russia and the remaining 140 were to be manufactured in India under a joint venture. But till now the deal has not been finalised and no significant progress has been made on it.
Given the delay in the deal with Russia, the Indian Army has now focused on the development of indigenous helicopters. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has developed a Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) which is specially designed to replace the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. The Indian Army has decided to buy 110 LUH helicopters in the first phase, in which 6 units are being evaluated. If Russia is unable to deliver the Kamov helicopters on time due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the Army will place a large order of LUH helicopters in the second phase.
The LUH is a 3 tonne class single engine helicopter designed to operate in less challenging conditions. However, the twin engine design of the Kamov 226T is considered suitable for safe operations in high altitude areas.
