Creating a Power BI theme is easy when you know where to start. In this video, I show how you can use AI like Copilot or ChatGPT to build a Power BI JSON theme, customise it, and load it back into your report.

I start with a simple base theme that I save in Power BI. Then I use that file to guide AI and ask for the changes I want. Background colors, borders, font sizes, data colors, and visual-specific formatting. In the vide,o I compare ChatGPT and Copilot. ChatGPT gave me a working result very fast. Copilot needed a bit more debugging and back and forth but still gave a starting point for a theme.
If you want to create your own theme without manually editing the full JSON, this is a great way to get started.
The final prompt used in this video is added below in the description.

Prompt 1

Hi there,
I want to create a Power BI JSON theme based on my company’s color scheme and our preferences.
I will provide you with a base JSON theme, and I will tell you what I would like to change.
Background color of the canvas: #F8FAFD
Background color of visuals: white
Border color: teal
Font color: black
Our general color scheme is: #2C3532, #0F6466, #D8B08C, #FFCB9A, #D2E8E3
Default font size: 10 (Segoe)
Title font size: 13 (Segoe Semibold)
Callout values: 15 (Segoe Semibold)
If there are several categories in a visual, I do not want extreme color changes, so please take that into account.

Prompt 2
This is already great. Could you please make sure that the background of the new KPI card is transparent and has no border?
The card itself should have a white background and a border, but not the outer area around it.
Also, for the donut chart, I only want the values in the data labels.
In the line chart, I would like to disable the title of the Y-axis.
In the matrix visual, I want the total values (row totals, column totals, and grand total) to have a sand-colored background. I do not want every second row to have a grey background.
In the table visual, I would like to have the same behavior as in the matrix.
The color scheme is not entirely what I like. I like the green tones, but the two lighter tones are not compatible with the rest. Let’s make those blue instead (but a blue that matches with the rest).
