In this video we are going to look at the sum of infinite geometric sequence
• By looking at what the sum of infinite geometric series means
• Look at the formula for sum to infinity
• Solve an Example
• and then you can try the practice questions at the end of this video on your own!
What does it mean to find the “Sum of the Infinite Geometric Sequence”?
We already know what a geometric sequence is: a sequence of numbers that form a pattern when the same number is multiplied or divided to each term.
ex: 5, 2.5, 1.25, .625,
where the common ratio, r, is 1/2 since we are multiplying to each term in the sequence.
But when what happens if we wanted to sum all the terms of our geometric sequence together?
That's where the infinite geometric series comes in!
ex: 5 + 2.5 + 1.25 + .625,...
There are two different types of infinite geometric series, ones that diverge to infinity and ones that converge to a value! The ones that converge to a value have a common ratio between -1 and 1.
