Hi, I’m April Blackburn, the Florida Department of Transportation’s Chief Technology Officer.
I’m excited to highlight a few of the many ways FDOT’s Transportation Technology Office supports the department.
The Transportation Technology Office is responsible for the strategy and operations of the department’s technology environment. Our team encourages safety, connectivity, and modernization of Florida’s transportation system. We do this by providing and aligning information and operational technology, creating enterprise data and technology standards and oversight, and enhancing cybersecurity. We ensure the department is engaged in, ready for, and adopting change to prepare for the future.
Let’s take a look at the five divisions that make up FDOT’s Transportation Technology Office.
• Office of Information Technology
o Enables FDOT to meet its goals and objectives through effective use of technology and helps prepare the department for the new transportation landscape
• Civil Integrated Management
o Provides strategic planning, leadership and support for operational technology/data within the department.
• Information Security Management
o Protects the digital assets of the department and
o Provides cybersecurity training and awareness activities to the department’s workforce
• Organization Change Management
o Assists with the development and execution of change management plans that focus on a combination of business engagement, business readiness, and business adoption activities
• Process and Quality Improvement
o Assists Transportation Technology leadership by verifying that it has the necessary resources to effectively perform the duties while maintaining the highest level of service to customers.
Some of the latest FDOT transportation-related technology initiatives include:
• SunTrax
o The nation’s first state-owned autonomous vehicle testing facility, is dedicated to the research, development and testing of emerging transportation technologies in safe and controlled environments.
• The Florida Automated Vehicles (FAV) program
o Which is helping to create the framework for implementation of autonomous and connected vehicle technologies on roadways by engaging stakeholders, developing research and pilot projects, and creating awareness of the technologies.
• The Florida Connected Vehicle Initiative
o Which uses leading edge technologies to quickly identify roadway hazards and alert road users so they may make informed decisions while traveling.
In order to make these technology initiatives a reality, lots of work goes on behind the scenes.
