Rare Lightning Strikes Toward Space
OKLAHOMA, UNITED STATES — Have you ever seen lightning that, instead of shooting toward the ground, explodes straight up, like a giant jet jet hurtling into space?
Like its distinct appearance, this type of lightning is called a giant jet and is the rarest and most powerful type of lightning, according to Live Science.
“Giant jet” lightning occurs at least 1,000 times a year and emits more than 50 times more energy than regular lightning.
And recently, scientists in the United States have detected the only giant jet lightning, the most powerful ever recorded.
Their research results were published in the journal Science Advances on August 3, 2022.
