Summer holidays in Beslan last a little longer than in other cities: the first days of September are dedicated to remembering the victims of the most brutal terrorist attack in Russia's recent history. Twenty years ago, on September 1, 2004, a group of militants took hostages at School No. 1. Federal authorities refused to negotiate, state media lied about the number of hostages, security forces stormed the building using indiscriminate weapons, and the investigation into the case remains ongoing. And all these years, officials have tried to forget the tragedy—even Putin, who arrived in Beslan shortly before the 20th anniversary, forgot how many children died in those days.
