What are kingpins?
The kingpin in a UAZ vehicle is designed as a steel rod. It forms the articulated joint between the steering knuckle and wheel hub assembly and the ball joint of the steering knuckle. All these components, together with the constant velocity joints (CV joints), form part of the front drive axle of all-wheel drive vehicles. Kingpins form a system that allows the steering wheels to deflect without interrupting the torque flow.
Kingpin functions:
Create pivot axes for the steering knuckles;
Elements that connect the ball joint and the steering knuckle into a single unit;
Ensure the required rigidity of the kingpin assembly and absorb the torques generated during vehicle movement. The steering knuckle receives forces from the wheels, and the kingpins transmit them to the axle beam.
