In this video we take a look at a rare quad socket server platform based on 4x LGA3647. Yes, this is the legendary system capable of running up to 4 Intel Xeon Gold or even Xeon Platinum CPUs at the same time. Not long ago, systems like this were considered absolute enterprise monsters with insane multi-processor architecture, massive motherboards and enormous computing power.

Today we’ll show exactly how a 4-socket server platform works, why servers with multiple CPUs exist in the first place, and what makes these systems so unusual even by modern standards.

But the most interesting part is the benchmark battle.

We compare 4x Intel Xeon Gold 6242 CPUs (12 cores each, 48 cores total) against a single AMD EPYC 7642 with 48 cores. Four Xeons with more than 600W combined CPU TDP versus one modern EPYC chip with roughly 220W TDP.

Can an old-school quad socket server still compete with a modern single-socket EPYC system? Does it still make sense to run multiple processors in one machine today? And how efficient are multi-processor systems compared to one powerful modern CPU?

We test everything from memory bandwidth to rendering, compression and synthetic benchmarks to find out.
