The Legend of the Abominable Dajjal and the Jassassa
The #dajjal and the #Jassassa are among the most persistent legends in #Islam. We hear so much about them that we think they are Quranic truths. In fact, there is not the slightest allusion to them in the Quran.
It comes from a #hadith narrated in the city of Kufa by Fatima Bint Qays, who is its sole source. Fatima Bint Qays is the sister of Al-Dhahak Ibn Qays. The latter was a close friend of the first #Umayyad #caliph, Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan. He appointed him as chief of his police and then as governor of the city of Kufa. When Muawiyah died, it was al-Dhahak who took charge of his burial. This gives you the degree of intimacy between the Ibn Qays family and the Umayyad state. Fatima lived in the Kufa and was close to her brother. We are at the heart of the caliphate and the political system of the time.
However, under the Umayyads, we see the proliferation of many legends originating from storytellers and peddlers. Many of these stories had political motivations and concealed formidable double meanings. One finds Nassibism in them when one reads between the lines. In addition to being amusing, these stories aimed to degrade the personality of the Prophet of Muslims and to attribute to him flaws, words, and attitudes contrary to his prophetic stance.
In this hadith (from Sahih Muslim), it is Tamim al-Daari who narrates to the Prophet, based on what Fatima bint Qays tells us. This story contains many anomalies, including anachronisms. In the context she provides for her story, she places two events:
The beginning of the jihad (Battle of Badr, 2 AH)
The arrival of Tamim and his conversion (9 AH)
These two events are at least seven years apart, and both are very well documented, so there is no doubt about their dates. No one claims that Tamim arrived just after the AH (impossible because he had very little contact with the Prophet, and all biographies agree on his rather late arrival), and no one can claim that the Prophet's wars began just before his death. However, Fatima bint Qays presents these two events as occurring simultaneously. This casts doubt on the reliability of this account, which cannot be cross-referenced with any other source.
One of the problems is that Fatima bint Qays claims to have heard this story from the Prophet in the mosque while he was telling it to the Muslims gathered after prayer. However, SHE is the only one who relates it. Stories told in front of many people end up being known and narrated according to many chains of narration. Here, it seems that she is the only one in this large gathering to have heard the story of the Dajjal and the Jasassa.
