€20 Billion for Frankfurt: What Does This Mega-Project Deliver?
20 billion euros for infrastructure in Frankfurt: Frankfurt Rhine/Main Plus aims to make the overburdened Frankfurt Central Station rail hub fit for the future. But what's behind this mega-project by Deutsche Bahn?
Frankfurt is one of Germany's most important railway hubs. ICE, IC, regional trains, S-Bahn trains, and freight trains converge on a heavily used rail network around Frankfurt Central Station, Frankfurt South Station, Frankfurt Stadium, and Frankfurt Airport.
Frankfurt Rhine/Main Plus is intended to fundamentally expand this rail infrastructure. The planned Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel is the centerpiece. However, numerous other projects are also part of the rail expansion in Frankfurt and Hesse.

This documentary focuses on the infrastructure in Frankfurt, the problems of the rail hub, and how the expansion is intended to make ICE, long-distance, regional, S-Bahn, and freight services more efficient in the long term.
The state of Hesse estimates the total cost of the Frankfurt Rhine/Main Plus program package at around 20 billion euros. The Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel alone was estimated at around 3.6 billion euros in the feasibility study, based on 2018 prices.
However, the projects are also subject to criticism: long planning phases, rising costs, and significant disruptions during construction. Will the planned rail expansion be sufficient to relieve Frankfurt's congestion in the long term?
