Elizabeth I of England
Known to history as the “Virgin Queen”, she led the country alone for more than 44 years, in what is remembered as England’s “Golden Age”.
By choosing never to marry, she demonstrated that a woman was as valuable as a man at the head of a state. She would say of herself that she married her Kingdom, calling her subjects “all my husbands, my good people”.
