Saving files when reinstalling Windows 11/10

If Windows 11/10 won't boot and you can't restore the system using restore points or a factory reset, you'll need to reinstall the operating system. This will require a bootable USB drive with Windows 11/10.

Before installation, use the command prompt in the recovery environment (WinRE) to determine which drive to install the system on and find out your current Windows version. This will help preserve all your personal files, which will appear in the Windows.old folder after the reinstallation.

COMMANDS:
diskpart
list volume
exit
C: (or another drive letter containing the Windows folder)
dir
dism /image:C:\ /get-currentedition
