UAV drone photography, 3D scanning, georeferenced crime scene survey and accident reconstructions, the use of 3D visualization in digital forensics, law and insurance can benefit by advanced PDF document creation.
By using tripod 3D laser scanners placed at multiple locations around the vehicle, a full 360 detailed survey is captured. The multiple raw point clouds are registered and aligned in editing software such as CloudCompare. Extraneous areas can be removed, and detailed areas of interest cropped and the result saved to xyz, pts, las or e57 point cloud format. Microsoft WORD reports are extended by inserting a placeholder image with Alt-Text to identify the 3D point cloud view area, and saved to a template PDF. Using PDF3D ReportGen software the e57 point cloud and the WORD template are merged to create a new interactive 3D point cloud display within the body of the vehicle damage scan report. Various settings are explained to get the best result, including point cloud thinning and view orientation. The resulting report is viewed using the standard Adobe Acrobat Reader DC without plugins.
