There are two main causes of unpleasant sewer odors:
the cause lies in your apartment. Perhaps the trap is clogged and simply needs cleaning, or perhaps you haven't used a plumbing fixture and the water seal has dried out.
the cause lies in the main sewer system. Each flush draws a large amount of air into the sewer, and to prevent this air from entering the sewer riser, an air vent is installed at the top of the riser. However, in apartment buildings, this air vent often becomes clogged or is removed. In this case, air is drawn in from the smallest trap, which holds the least amount of water. Water is drawn out of the trap, causing an unpleasant odor. As we have a shower stall with a minimal trap, and it's constantly being sucked out, we no longer have the option of using the sewer system, and we really don't want to live with the smell. There's a solution: we can install a check valve that will drain water from our drain and prevent the unpleasant odor from returning. We'll install it now.
