Rule No. 12 | Comparative Degree | 100 RULES OF GRAMMAR| BY VASUNDHRA THAKUR
What is the Comparative Degree?
The Comparative Degree is used in English grammar to compare two people, things, or situations. It highlights how one is better, worse, larger, smaller, or different than the other.
For example:
He is taller than his brother.
This book is more interesting than the other one.
How is the Comparative Degree Formed?
For Short Adjectives (one syllable):
Add -er to the adjective and use "than."
Example: fast → faster than
Sentence: This car is faster than that one.
For Long Adjectives (two or more syllables):
Use "more" or "less" before the adjective and "than."
Example: beautiful → more beautiful than
Sentence: She is more beautiful than her sister.
Irregular Adjectives:
Some adjectives don’t follow the rules above.
Example: good → better than
Sentence: This plan is better than the previous one.
