The refugee crisis has reached historic proportions. Never since the Second World War have so many people been displaced as is currently the case. Men, women, and children are forced to flee their homes. Over four million Syrians have left a country utterly devastated by civil war. People are also fleeing in droves from Iraq, Afghanistan, Eritrea, and South Sudan in search of safety elsewhere. Europe is responding to the influx of refugees with border closures and tightened security measures. The EU has so far failed to define a common asylum policy.
