I'm incredibly proud to share this historic moment for our South Bay community. After decades of work, Chula Vista City Council unanimously approved a lease agreement that brings San Diego State University's School of Nursing and Global Campus to the Millenia Library Building—marking the first partnership between the City and a four-year university.
I fought to secure nearly $3 million in state funding through AB 91 to make this SDSU nursing program a reality. This investment represents expanding access to higher education in a region of nearly half a million people that has been underserved for too long.
The focus on nursing is especially critical. Our region faces a severe shortage of healthcare workers, and by training students locally, this program will prepare the next generation of nurses while strengthening our workforce and our community's health. As Sharp Healthcare's Victoria Barba shared at the meeting, California is facing a growing healthcare workforce shortage, making partnerships like this essential.
This effort aligns directly with the long-standing vision for the University Innovation District in Chula Vista. Together with San Diego State University, Southwestern College, and the Sweetwater Union High School District, we're building educational pathways that keep our students close to home while preparing them for high-demand careers.
I'm grateful to Mayor John McCann, the Chula Vista City Council, SDSU President Adela de la Torre, Dean Gibson from the School of Nursing, Sharp Healthcare, and all the community partners who made this possible. This is just the beginning—together we're creating opportunities and building the foundation for a more robust university presence in our South Bay.
