In mid-September, China’s Ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng, announced four new "red lines" set by Xi Jinping: Taiwan, democracy and human rights, the political system, and development rights. While the Taiwan issue remains a traditional red line, the others are intended to safeguard domestic matters rather than foreign relations. The CCP's emphasis on these red lines, especially on issues like democracy and human rights, aims to restrict internal criticism and maintain control over the Chinese populace. These red lines, therefore, function more as tools of domestic control than genuine diplomatic boundaries. The overuse and exaggeration of these red lines reflect Xi Jinping’s insecurity and serve to suppress both international criticism and domestic dissent.
