So you like IV sedation?
Yes, we love IV sedations because our patients love IV sedation. This is a wonderful technique that we have to provide our patients in a very safe environment and level of depreciation in their feelings and emotions that allows us to push through these procedures, not having pain, remembrance or experiencing any of the work. So it's very comfortable.
What do you monitor when you're doing IV sedation?
That's a very good question because we have to be safe for our patients and safety always comes first. We have, of course, a pulse oximeter that checks their oxygen level. We check their heart rate, we check their pulse and we make sure that they're breathing properly. So this is exactly what we need to do to make sure that your.
Is blood pressure is even lower when you're sedated?
Absolutely. And this is a very good point. People are always concerned about heart disease and conscious sedation and say, well, I have heart problems and maybe it's not safe for me. It's actually quite the opposite. Patients who do have cardiac concerns, IV sedation is an indication for those patients because they're going to be relaxed, they're not going to be stressed, and therefore there will be less pressure on their heart, so it will lower the blood pressure.
Now, oral sedation the pill. Some doctors only do oral sedation. They don't have the certificate to do IV.
You're not a big fan of the pill. Why?
Well, there are multiple reasons for that. The first reason is because every patient is different and it's very difficult to what we call titrate to find the right level of medications to give them because it's just the one tablet and see what happens. So it's tough. Some people need more, some people need less. And if that medication, that tablet, is not enough, then the patient is actually a bad experience during the procedure. But at the same time, if that tablet is too much for them and we need to give them any reversal drugs, it's very difficult because we don't have access to an IV to give them medications immediately to help them. So the tablet, it's probably okay for basic care, short procedures. So when it comes down to gum surgeries, periodontal surgeries or a dental implant placement, we like to have full control over the patient's vital and safety during the procedure
And you can pull them out of it easier.
Absolutely. We have a series of drugs that we can use to reverse them and just titrate them up and down as we need to do them to be safe.
