The biggest concern of experts, who keep an eye on the consumption of energy in Maryland, is to find the best way to save energy. The best way is to moderate the amount of energy used at peak times. By using the smart meters, which are wireless, wholesale prices on energy are used and thereby it is cheaper energy that is being used.
Everyone is watching to see how Maryland's consumers are going to fair with deregulation of energy. If it works out well, this technique will be used nationwide. Deregulation has never been an "if", it has always been a "when" it was going to happen. All it took to get it started was for some state government to have the courage to pass the laws that would bring it about. This is exactly what Maryland has done.
Competition in businesses is what brings out the creativity in the owners of those businesses. When customers have more than just one choice of companies to sign up to receive their power from, those companies will have to produce that power at a competitive price, or they will not have any customers to stay in business with.
Those same businesses also have to prove their reliability to continuously deliver their electricity or their competitors will take all of their business away.
The entire country will be deregulating the electricity production business over time. Maryland is simply leading the way. Maryland will be showing all the other states that there really are enough people ready, willing and able to step up and take over the business of producing electricity from the government.
