Oh, my small homeland, stretched across an isthmus,
where the sky is clearer and the sun shines brighter,
all your music resounds within me, just as
the sea echoes in the tiny cell of a seashell!
I turn my gaze and sometimes feel dread
when I cannot see the path that will lead me back to you...
Perhaps I would never have known how much I loved you,
if Fate had not decreed that I cross the sea!...
The homeland is memory... Fragments of life
wrapped in shreds of love or sorrow;
the rustling palm, the familiar music,
the garden now without flowers, without leaves, without greenery.
My homeland is the old, winding paths
that my feet, since childhood, have tirelessly trod,
where the familiar ancient trees
speak to my soul of a time gone by.
Instead of these proud towers with golden spires,
where a weary sun comes to swoon,
leave me the old trunk where I carved a date,
where I stole a kiss, where I learned to dream.
Oh, my ancient towers, beloved and distant,
I long for your pealing!
I have seen many towers, heard many bells,
but none, my distant towers!, knew
how to sing like you, to sing and weep.
My homeland is memory... Fragments of life

the orchard now without flowers, without leaves, without greenery.
Oh, my homeland, so small that you fit entirely
beneath the shadow of our flag:
perhaps you were so small so that I could
carry you everywhere within my heart!
