To create the ideal Bass fishery, we recommend that 10-15% of the total surface area of your pond or lake offers some sort of cover. For trophy-class Bass production, we suggest you target the 15% goal. To determine the extent of habitat improvements necessary in your body of water, you first need to assess the habitat currently present. You’ll also need to evaluate at what depth in the water column these natural structures occupy because habitat availability in all portions of the water column is key to a productive, sustainable fishery. Armed with this information, you can develop either a short- or long-term strategy for your fish habitat improvement efforts. Using our Pond King 5-acre demonstration lake, we’ll show you how you can manage a large scale habitat installation in a 3-part series. This late winter installation is Part-1; Assessing Available Fish Habitat.
