Hi everyone!
For this video, I show how to import the maps that we exported in our previous video, Normal map (As bump/Normal) and Height map (as Displacement). I will show these using Vray render in Maya.
Remember, Normal maps create an illusion, in this case the geoemetry in final render will still be just be 400faces, while Displacement maps create actual, real displacement, so final geometry count will be far higher than 400 faces.
Therefore, while it is important to compare the results between the two, Displacement map almost always win in the final result because its geoemtry and resolution is so much higher. But the trade off may not be worth it because in a CG Pipeline, many times using displacement map is too much of a luxury and not optimized.
That is why using Normal maps to create the illusion of the high res details on a lower res model (optimized) is so important for animation, film and games pipeline.
