Two tests for every kitten before introductions with your current cat

My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about two tests that should always be done before introducing your new kitten to your current cat or cats. A new kitten or cat can have disease that can be spread to the cats currently living in your house.
The first test is an FIV (Feline Immune Deficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) snap test. This is an Elisa test that will say positive or negative. This is a blood sample test and it can be completed very quickly. I tell my pet owners not to leave until I complete this test.
The second test is a fecal exam. Sometimes we call this a poop exam. This exam is all about looking for GI parasites. Gastrointestinal parasites are usually spread fecal oral, so the goal is to make sure no parasites enter your house. Because, most cat's will share litter boxes to some degree.
Of course your veterinarian will do a complete exam. Your vet will look for things like ear mites and fleas that are ectoparasites that can also be spread to other cats.
