After already delighting the small white MacBook with macOS Mojave and macOS Catalina, we're now trying macOS Big Sur. This is currently Apple's most current operating system.

In this video, we'll show you how to get macOS Big Sur running on the 12-year-old white unibody MacBook.

🛑 Disclaimer: Everything we show here is for demonstration purposes only. It's quite possible that your MacBook will no longer work properly afterward, and you'll have to revert to macOS High Sierra. This is only a proof of concept. Additionally, not all apps may work, and if they do, they may run very slowly.

We also assume no responsibility for lost data. Please also make a backup beforehand. This will save you a lot of trouble and work.

Please check beforehand whether your hardware is even supported. Our white MacBook is a MacBook 6.1 from 2009. It has 4 GB of RAM, 2 x 2.26 GHz CPUs, and an Nvidia Gforce 9400M with 256 MB of memory.

We are using the Open Core Legacy Patcher tool here. You can find all the information on Github:

https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-L...

The AnyMacOS tool allows you to download many macOS versions from Apple's official servers without logging in:

https://www.sl-soft.de/anymacos/

On Apple's website, you can find out how to create a USB stick with macOS and make it bootable:

https://support.apple.com/de-de/HT201372

Specifically, I used this script. However, it requires that your drive is named "MyVolume" (the script is also available on Apple's website):

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

⚠️ Another warning: ⚠️
If you're not familiar with Terminal commands and/or are unsure, don't try this. There's a good chance you'll lose data or prevent Big Sur from running.

Enjoy this video.
