Stripping screws on a Japanese car or motorcycle?
The problem may not be the screw — it may be the screwdriver.
In this video I explain the difference between JIS and Phillips screwdrivers, why Japanese screws get damaged so easily, and which bits work best to remove them safely.
If you keep damaging srews on your Japanese car, motorbike, bike or any poduct belonging to the Japanese industry; you are using the wrong srewdriver or bits. Many Honda, Yamaha, Toyota and other Japanese vehicles use JIS screws that can be damaged by standard Phillips screwdrivers This video explains how to stop damaging or stripped screws if you own a Japanese branded vehicle.

Japan have their own standards for screws and this differs from the Phillips screws in North America. Using a Phillips screwdriver in a JIS screw will damage the screw head. I have explained all the difference in the video.
I also explain how screwdriver standards differ slighlty. Companies that makes tools do not have to follow certain standards. Quality also matters. This is what, in my opinion, makes the difference between stripping JIS screws and not.
Vessel tool company is the oldest tool company in Japan and they make great quality screwdrivers and bits. In the past they used to have JIS B4633 certification and would print the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) mark on their screwdrivers. However they no long do that since 2008, as they say getting JIS certification is costly. However their screwdrivers and bits are still the best for JIS screws. You will not find any screwdriver or bit that says they are JIS certified.
JIS screws can be indentified by a dot or a cross (plus) sign on the screw, next to the cross section of the screw. However there are JIS screws that do not have any sign or symbol.
JIS compatible screwdrivers or bits like from Vessel also work well on Phillips head screws. Phillips head screwdrivers will damage JIS head screws. So buying JIS screwdrivers or bits is a better choice.
So if you are damaging or stripping your screw heads on any product from Japan you should look into screwdrivers that are compatible with JIS standard screws and a company that sell quality tools.
