Lesson 82: Types of OSPF Networks
Welcome back to our Free CCNA Course and in this video, we will discuss different types of OSPF Networks.
OSPF is such a protocol in which database exchange is different in different network type conditions. Given below are the several kinds of OSPF utilized:
For broadcast networks, the type of OSPF network that is used is broadcast. This is a multi access segment where there is always DR and BDR selection.
In the case of serial lines, the kind of OSPF network that is put to use is point to point.
For frame relay and X.25, the OSPF network that is used is NBMA.
If you have four routers and a switch making it a multi access segment and if you want to configure OSPF here, you will have to select the DR (Designated Router) and BDR. All the routers will form adjacencies with all other routers and the database will be shared within all the routers as well. Flooding of data will create chaos in the network so to overcome these setbacks, we have DR and BDR and it also reduces the number of adjacencies.
Suppose if you have four routers and one DR in a network, then the routers will form adjacencies with DR only and not with each other. They will form only neighbourships with each other but won’t exchange any data with one another. So if any of the routers needs to exchange data with another router, it will simply send it to the DR first and then it will send the database to the other router. By just forming adjacency with the DR, we can decrease the number of adjacencies in a particular segment. The formula to calculate the adjacencies is n(n-1)/2, where n is the number of routers.
BDR stands for Backup Designated Router and plays the role of DR in the case of any failure or sudden breakdown of the system and it is done on the basis of priority.
So, in this video, we have understood what the different OSPF network types are and how DR and BDR elections will take place in the case of OSPF.
