In the 1970s, NASCAR only weighed cars before the start. DiGard Racing found a way around this: they poured lead pellets directly into the frame of a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, passed a minimum weight, and then dropped dozens of kilograms during the race through a hidden mechanism. A lighter car meant faster acceleration, better handling, and less tire wear. The trick worked for over a year until the pellets accidentally spilled out in the pit lane on live television. After that, NASCAR changed the rules forever.
