Grid method drawing + GIMP grid tutorial (new updated version). I'll show you how to make a grid in GIMP on your reference photo and use the grid method to get the proportions right on your sketch.

One of the biggest struggles in creating portrait art is getting the proportions right. It doesn't matter if you're great at shading pencil drawings. If the initial proportions are wrong, the likeliness of the person in the portrait will be off. I used to draw portraits completely freehand, but then I started using a grid for the sketching stage to get better proportions and likeliness and to sketch faster. I think it's a good tool, when you're drawing from a photo.

First crop the photo so that it's the same aspect ratio as the paper or canvas you'll be drawing on. Then decide the size of the grid you want to use on the paper and try to mimic the grid in #GIMP on the reference photo.

Go to Filters - Render - Pattern - Grid. Now set the spacing and click ok. I used a spacing of 380 pixels for this one, but it depends the resolution of your photo and how dense you want the grid to be. Export your image with a new name and the grid will be saved onto your image.

I've made another version of this tutorial before, where the grid was not saved onto the image so if you'd rather try that, here's a link to it:    • How to Use Graphite Transfer Paper || Art ...

You need to copy the same grid on your paper, meaning that it has to have the same amount of squares as on the reference photo. Once you have the grid on both the photo and the paper, you can start copying each square from the photo onto the paper.

Since I'm sketching on a graph paper and then transferring the sketch onto the actual paper or canvas, I don't need to erase the grid lines from the paper. I have a video on how to transfer sketches as well, if you want to see it:    • How to Use Graphite Transfer Paper || Art ...

The stock photo is from StoryBlocks (previously called GraphicStock), from a free 7 day trial they offered.
