1. Chechnya is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia. According to Leonti Mroveli, the 11th-century Georgian chronicler, the word Caucasian is derived from the Vainakh ancestor Kavkas. The English name Chechnya is a transliteration of the Russian (Чечня́), which according to Amjad Jaimoukha's The Chechens is a 17th-century Russification of Shashan, a Kabardian name for the people who call themselves Nokhchiy (which may be derived from the words for sheep cheese, the plow, or the Biblical Noah).
2. Grozny is the capital city of Chechnya, Russia. In Russian, "Grozny" means "fearsome", "menacing", or "redoubtable". The fortress of Groznaya (Гро́зная; lit. fearsome) was founded in 1818[3] as a Russian military outpost on the Sunzha River by general Aleksey Petrovich Yermolov. As the fort was being built the workers were fired upon by the Chechens.
3. Situated in the eastern part of the North Caucasus, partially in Eastern Europe, Chechnya is surrounded on nearly all sides by Russian Federal territory.
4. Although over 50,000 Chechens and over 12,000 Ingush were fighting against Nazi Germany on the front line (including heroes of the USSR: Abukhadzhi Idrisov, Khanpasha Nuradilov, Movlid Visaitov), and although Nazi German troops were fought to a complete stop at two Chechen-Ingush ASSR cities Malgobek and Ordzhonikidze (renamed to Vladikavkaz) after capturing half of the Caucasus in less than a month; Chechens and Ingush were falsely accused as Nazi supporters and entire nations were deported during Operation Lentil to the Kazakh SSR (later Kazakhstan) in 1944 near the end of World War II where over 60% of Chechen and Ingush populations perished.
5. In 1921, Chechnya attempted to break away from the Soviet Union, but was reclaimed by the USSR. Since then, Chechnya has repeatedly attempted to gain independence. From 1994 to 1996, Russia fought Chechen guerillas in a conflict that became known as the First Chechen War. Tens of thousands of civilians died, but Russia failed to win control of Chechnya's mountainous terrain, giving Chechnya de facto independence. In May 1996, [Boris] Yeltsin signed a ceasefire with the separatists, and they agreed on a peace treaty the following year.
6. According to the 2010 Census, the population of the republic is 1,268,989, up from 1,103,686 recorded in the 2002 Census. As of the 2010 Census, Chechens at 1,206,551 make up 95.3% of the republic's population. Other groups include Russians (24,382, or 1.9%), Kumyks (12,221, or 1%), Ingush (1,296 or 0.1%) and a host of smaller groups. Since 2002, Chechnya has experienced a classic post-conflict baby-boom.
7. Muslim tradition here limits any consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, or hookah, not even in fancy hotels and restaurants. Locals go to a healthy lifestyle and enjoy sports, culture, guns and traveling. Grozny is about 1,850 km south of Moscow.
