This video is an overview of Gentoo and its main derivative projects. Gentoo Linux is based on a unique software manager called Portage, and unlike the vast majority of other Linux distros that rely on software distributed in binary format, here the source code for each package to be installed is typically compiled locally, based on the user's preferences. Ultimately, the resulting software is better optimized for the specific type of computer. Gentoo can be described as a meta-distribution, as most users have configurations and installed programs unique to their system. Its name comes from a species of penguin that swims faster than others, and was chosen specifically to reflect the potential speed improvements in software execution, thanks to specific optimization for each machine on which the OS is installed.
