Following Olympic gold medalist swimmer Joseph Schooling's cannabis saga, some were surprised to learn that under Singapore’s current law, any citizen or permanent resident found to have abused controlled drugs overseas will be treated as if they had abused drugs in Singapore.
To put it simply: if you’re a citizen or permanent resident, it’s a crime to do drugs in a country outside Singapore, regardless of whether or not it is legal or not in that country.
Despite the public outcry, Joseph Schooling surprisingly gained a lot of support. Most shocking of which came from Minister Shanmugam, the front runner in tackling drug consumption and trafficking.
While some found the treatment given to the athlete unfair, it begs the question: why should laws in Singapore apply to Singaporeans overseas? We took to the streets to get public opinion!
