ISR includes a group of sensor technologies and, in today’s world, Electronic Warfare is overlapping with ISR. Often several types of sensor applications are deployed together in multi-mission payloads. So, for example, a given payload may need to support SIGINT, searching for signals of interest, as well as EO/IR capability. Each sensor type has unique processing requirements.

One example of a processor-application is using FPGAs for SIGINT & radar. Beamforming, a technique that enables direction finding, is key to both types of applications and FPGA-based designs are ideal for beamforming operations. Another great fit is using hybrid processors for EO/IR. A hybrid processor, combining x86 and GPU architectures, can efficiently meet varied and complex processing needs in a single piece of silicon.
