The grasshopper and the cricket are the voices of the ‘Poetry of Earth' in Keats' poem.

Through the sounds of the grasshopper in the summer and the cricket in the winter, Keats constructs a continuation of earth poetry. The grasshopper, avoiding the vicissitudes of nature, continues to sing while all other creatures have passed out from the heat. The cricket's harsh song warms the land in the frigid winter when existence becomes unbearable.
