Captain Marvel, aka Shazam, is a superhero in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created in 1939 by artist C.C. Beck and writer Bill Parker for Fawcett Comics, the character first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 in 1940. Billy Batson transforms into Captain Marvel by speaking the magic word "Shazam!" The character has faced numerous villains, including Black Adam, Doctor Sivana, and Mister Mind, and shares his powers with his sister Mary Batson and friend Freddy Freeman, forming the Marvel Family.
Captain Marvel was the most popular superhero in the 1940s, even outselling Superman, and was adapted to film in a 1941 serial. However, Fawcett ceased publishing Captain Marvel-related comics in 1953 after a copyright infringement suit from DC Comics, who claimed that Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman. In 1972, Fawcett licensed the character rights to DC, who now owns all rights to the entire family of characters.
Due to trademark conflicts with Marvel Comics, DC has marketed the character using the trademark Shazam! since his 1972 reintroduction. The character was renamed "Shazam" in 2011, and has been adapted for television twice by Filmation and was the subject of a 2019 film adaptation. Captain Marvel/Shazam has been ranked as a top comic book character and hero by Wizard magazine, IGN, and UGO Networks, and is considered a reminder of a simpler time and has been compared to Superman with a sense of crazy, goofy fun.
