For simple projects - single mesh, single texture - there may not be any advantage. For complex projects - multiple meshes, multiple texture, animations etc. - there is.
(important note: as Cal3D cannot export the new 'nodes' system (https://www.katsbits.com/tutorials/#v..., the room project used for test is set up for Cal3D only [Armatures and bones], which then require some additional steps to completion when exported to FBX that otherwise are not needed when nodes are used).
